Government Initiatives
The NSW Government actively supports the information and communications technology (ICT) industry.
The NSW 2021 - the NSW Government's 10-year plan details growth strategies and priorities for ICT and other key industry sectors to 2021.
The NSW Government is working with industry to develop a Digital Economy Action Plan to outline a vision and strategy for the ICT and Creative sectors over the next decade.
Initiatives to support the ICT industry
The Government is involved in:
- Ongoing research and development of new technologies
- Supporting the development of in novative start-up companies
- Identifying export opportunities
- Showcasing local talent and success stories
- Nurturing skills in ICT through training and education at all levels
- Technology platforms and industry development through clustering
- Attracting and anchoring ICT Investment by major companies and international ICT events (such as CeBIT)
Initiatives within government
The NSW Department of Finance and Services (DFS) works to ensure the State Government’s ICT strategies and programs meet the needs of the people of NSW.
DFS provides the Government with sector-wide leadership and advice on ICT procurement, e-government and other ICT activities. Its initiatives include:
- Data centre reform – a project to investigate how best to address the government’s ever-increasing demand for computing capacity, while also improving the security, capacity and reliability of processing and storing data across Government.
- Government Licensing Service – a single integrated online system managing over 2 million NSW licences across 57 different licence types. It cuts red tape, reduces IT costs and improves information quality and access.
- Data.NSW – provides a single point of access for public sector information including publications, spatial information, raw data, audio visual files and web services from agencies across the state.
