Backhaul Blackspots
Backbone transmission links (also known as ‘backhaul’) are being constructed to Broken Hill and five other ‘blackspots’ in regional Australia where there is a lack of competitive infrastructure.
Backhaul networks consist of high capacity optical fibre transmission links that connect communications facilities in cities, regional centres and rural towns.
Under the Australian Government’s Regional Backbone Blackspots Program (‘RBBP’), new optical fibre regional backbone links are being built to:
- Broken Hill (New South Wales)
- Geraldton (Western Australia)
- Darwin (Northern Territory)
- Emerald and Longreach (Queensland)
- Victor Harbor (South Australia)
- South West Gippsland (Victoria).
The links will provide more than 100 access points en-route to the six locations.
A total of around 6,000 kilometres of optical fibre backbone will be laid.
